Amaya’s smile caught Aiyana off guard. It was brighter and more open then she had expected. Aiyana was skeptical about calling Amaya but her first name only, but she didn’t feel like she had much of a choice. There was a brief pause and Aiyana started fiddling with the hair behind her ears. Last name? I haven’t used it in forever. Aiyana thought hard, but nothing was coming to her head, only her first name. “Ju-just Aiyana is fine Miss Matsu- Amaya.”
Amaya’s comment about her brother made Aiyana smile a little; a sad smile. Aiyana loved hearing stories about siblings. It gave her hope she would see her brother again. Though Aiyana knew that she might not recognise him at first because it had been so long.
Amaya made no movements to leave and Aiyana started to really worry. What does she want from me? Have I done something wrong? Aiyana did not move other than the small shaking she couldn’t repress.
“Talk to me?” Aiyana whispered, trying to keep her voice stable. What? Aiyana was shocked at Amaya’s question.
“Of course. Miss Amaya. You are more than welcome to join us. I understand.” Aiyana answered instinctively, bowing to Amaya. Then she thought about Amaya’s question more. She’s…she’s asking me…for my…why? Why does my opinion matter? Aiyana’s honest opinion was that Amaya made her nervous and she would feel more comfortable if the elf did not come. However, Aiyana couldn’t say that. It would be rude to say that to an upperclassman. A small part of Aiyana was also interested in Amaya and why she was acting this way toward Aiyana.
“I don’t mind if you want to come.” Aiyana repeated with more feeling so it didn’t sound like something she HAD to say.
Kvothe came back. He was obviously lying about why he had left. Aiyana forced herself not to move towards him. She felt on the verge of falling to pieces. Maybe I should just go home…but Kvothe paid already, I can’t.
As Aiyana approached the door, she heard her master’s coming over. “Aiyana,” was all Benjamin said. Marie acted out a little more.
“Oh, Aiyana dear. You look lovely. What a beautiful dress.” Marie’s voice had a little emotion, but to Aiyana it was as though Marie thought Aiyana was just modeling it for her. Aiyana flinched when Marie gripped her hands tightly. “Oh, just lovely. Kvothe, how can I thank you?”
Aiyana watched Marie turn to Kvothe. That was weird.
“Lady Luck is on your side tonight.”
Aiyana froze. Benjamin hadn’t muttered that in more than a whisper, and he was much too far for the others to hear. What does he mean by that? Aiyana tried to make her presence very small. Benjamin didn’t glance her way, instead he joined his wife
I don’t like this. Not one bit.
